LATE NEWS

With a bi-monthly publication, it is inevitable that, sometimes, items of news will come to our attention just after we have gone to press. If they cannot wait until the next issue, this page will carry the information. It is not, however, intended for items that could have reached us in time for publication in the magazine.

A Celtic Dance Festival is taking place at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells (17/18 May) as part of the annual Royal Welsh Smallholder & Garden Festival. Details from .

Yscolan - springtime residential retreat for musicians Friday, April 25th to Sunday, April 27th 2008 Pentre Ifan, Preseli, Pembrokeshire, West Wales ceri@yscolan.info

A downloadable pdf with all details and an application form is available by visiting www.yscolan.info and following the links to preswyl / residential weekend.

An opportunity to play, learn and contemplate music at a springtime weekend retreat for ten adult (18+) musicians of mixed technical ability. All in the splendid isolation of the magical rural setting of the Preseli hills. The weekend will be underpinned with inspirational input from piper and flute player Ceri Rhys Matthews.

The yscolan weekend will focus on the relationship that exists between the creative musician working in cultural isolation today on the one hand, and on the other, the common, inherited, musical culture bequeathed by the past's anonymous musicians.

The yscolan weekend's activity will be flexible and will respond to the input of its participants, whether we call ourselves jazz, traditional, folk or classical musicians. In this way the content brought by each musician will shape the weekend's form. But the starting point will be a common desire to arrive at a deeper understanding of our own, personal musical expression.

Cyfle i encilio am y penwythnos yng nghwmni deg oedolyn o gerddor (18+) o allu cerddorol cymysg, i chwarae, i ddysgu ac i fyfyrio ynghylch cerddoriaeth. A’r cyfan yn llonyddwch hyfryd y lleoliad gwledig hudol yng ngwanwyn bryniau’r Preseli. Seilir y penwythnos ar fewnbwn ysbrydoledig oddiwrth y pibydd a'r ffliwtydd Ceri Rhys Matthews.

Yn y modd hyn bydd cyfraniad pob cerddor yn llywio ffurf y penwythnos. Ond y man cychwyn fydd y dyhead cyffredin i ddod i ddealltwriaeth ddyfnach o’n mynegiant cerddorol personol ein hunain.

"Each of us who are interested in music making, particularly un-schooled, local music making, have a little bag full of our stories, our musical tools and tricks and tunes and tastes and smells and fruits and tears and triumphs. Everything we ever played or cared about is in that bag and a great more besides.

Over the years I have known Ceri I have caught him rummaging around in that bag and stood amazed as time after time he has produced, without any ceremony, some of the rarest treasure I have ever seen or heard." Chris Wood
